The first 'thought of the day!' And the one that lead me onto making this blog. One thing I've noticed about people in Britain is how there are two types of conversation. Shit conversation, and decent conversation. Im sure there are all sorts of shades of grey in between but im going to classify them like that. So how do you define 'shit conversation?' It's easier to give examples of this: shit conversation is pretty much the same as small talk, although entire conversations can be made of shit. Being British, the best example has to be talking about football. For some blokes this seems to be the only thing worth talking about. Its something I never understood. How can anyone sit in a pub and talk about the same topic for more than an hour when it all comes down to the same thing. Here's what im talking about:
"Orroight mate, did you see the match last night?"
"Yeah it was fucking brilliant. Bit of a disappointment towards the end mind"
"Yeah I know what you mean. Ashley Cole was on fire the first half of that match, after his goal the game he was dragging the team down a bit."
"Nah I thought he was brilliant, but they definitely should have taken Defoe off"
And it carries on like this... maybe an hour, maybe longer
as a conversation goes on it becomes less about a particular match and more about general football i.e. how good particular players are compared to how much of a bellend said player is off the pitch.
Crap conversation isn't limited to football though. It always seems to be locked into the present, the near future or the near past. For most people, its a case of 'what did you do at the weekend?' 'What are you doing next weekend?' 'What have you been up to today.' Theres millions of examples of it. Just take a public bus and eavesdrop on any of the conversations around you. In any conversation, people don't start talking about their deepest darkest thoughts, that would just be strange. You need a bit of poor quality convo to get the ball rolling. A bit of discussion on the weekend, on 'that customer at work the other day,' about 'that fucking long essay I have to finish by friday.' But some people seem to be capable of only talking about meaningless stuff. Its like they have nothing serious to get off their mind except the day's events, or last nights events. They might even have an interesting story to tell about something that happened the previous week. But they are incapable of decent conversation. Unfortunately they seem to be more 'socially acceptable.' Those boys sitting at the back of the bus chatting about how their crew were 'ruckin up dem boyz until dey brought out shanks,' the lager louts talking about their favourite teams. Face it, you talk about anything serious and meaningful in a public place or on a bus, or anywhere where you can be heard, you may get a few funny looks.
Most people are capable of talking about things with meaning. However there just doesn't seem to be anywhere to do it. People who write blogs are probably capable of talking about meaningful stuff. Probably because they have a lot of stuff to get out of their heads.
